Lactation Counselors

Phillips Pediatrics offers comprehensive breastfeeding and lactation services. We are a unique team because our providers, Dr. Catherine Phillips and PNP Brooke Underwood, are also Certified Lactation Counselors with over 20 years of combined lactation experience. Both Dr. Phillips and Brooke manage initial breastfeeding latch difficulty in the newborn period, infant weight loss, breast pump/pumping management, supplementation, as well as a variety of individualized needs that come with each stage of feeding.

Our Certified Lactation Counselors, Dr. Catherine Phillips, PNP Brooke Underwood, and BSN Sierra Ashe, were trained by the Center for Breastfeeding. Certified Lactation Counselors have successfully completed a minimum of 95 hours of training based upon the footprint of the World Health Organization/ UNICEF Breastfeeding Counseling Training Course; have successfully passed a criterion-referenced examination; and demonstrated the competencies and skills required to provide safe, evidence-based counseling for pregnant, lactating and breastfeeding women. Breastfeeding Services

We offer lactation counseling in prenatal consults for parents who want to prepare for breastfeeding prior to delivery. After delivery, we incorporate lactation counseling into your baby’s newborn visits. We also offer lactation consults in our clinic and virtually via telemedicine throughout each stage of feeding and can usually accommodate same day appointments.

We encourage families to use all of your community breastfeeding resources. We will happily collaborate with your birthing hospital lactation department, local lactation consultants, WIC, and other lactation experts in our area. We recommend La Leche League or Baptist Hospital North Mississippi’s weekly support group for new moms looking for a community of breastfeeding mothers.

When extra support is needed, we refer to International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, Jodi Wells of Magnolia Family Nutrition and Katie Wiygul Lactation Consulting. We refer to pediatric dentists, Dr. Alisha Li and Dr. Katie Curtis when lip and tongue ties cause feeding problems. We refer families to Dr. Glick at Mississippi Lactation Services in Jackson when local resources are not enough.
